We covered our 12 acres of strawberries for next years picking the week after Thanksgiving. The day after we got done we received about 4-6 inches of snow. This is great for the Strawberry Plants as its like an extra layer of insulation.
Thanks to all who made our 2009 season a success and see you next year!
The weather dictates when the berries will be ready to pick. This is usually about Mid-June.
We will update this page when the picking season begins. We will do a early morning report of conditions and we will post any changes during the day. During the picking season we plan to be open every day 7am-7pm. Sometimes we must close early if ripe berries get picked out. You can also call for an update just before you head out to get strawberries. April -10- 2009 We started taking the wheat straw mulch off of the 8 acres of strawberries we will be picking this year. The plants look like they came through the winter in good shape.
April- 16-2009 The 22,000 strawberry plants that we will be planting this year arrived on a refrigerated semi trailer today. We store them in our walk in cooler at 34 degrees until we can get the 4 acre field worked up and ready to plant.
May-5-2009 -We planted most of the strawberry plants today. A few more hours and we will be done planting for 2009.
May-23-2009 - There was a little frost, ran the irrigation pump to spray water on the plants from 11 pm to 7 am. When one gallon of water freezes into ice, 1,172 BTU's of heat are released. As long as water is continually applied to the plants, the temperature under the ice will not fall below 32 degrees. Strawberry blossoms can actually take temperature's below 32 for a few hours and still produce fruit.
May- 24- 2009- The early strawberries variety's of Wendy and Earliglow are in full bloom and looking good.
May 28- Some green fruit is starting to appear.
